As often when it comes to orientation this activity requires a lot of precision. It all depends on the results you want to have.

To pick up a magnetic direction with your compass start by aiming at a mark with the arrow on your compass.

Then turn the dial of the compass so that the north of the dial corresponds to the magnetic north indicated by the pointer.

Be careful! Do not loose the aim of your mark while turning the dial
