To pick up a heading on a map you will first need to trace a Lambert grid with a black pencil and a ruler.
You then need to trace the route you want to follow (still with a pencil and a ruler)

Put the compass along the route you want to follow, make sure its in the right direction or you could go the exact opposite way !

Turn the dial so that the back lines are parallel to your grid, north up.
The direction of the pointer doesn’t matter at that point.

You can now read the bearing on the mark of the compass. Here its 242° since the compass is graduated 2° by 2°.

If you want to walk following your compass you need to transform that heading in a magnetic direction MD with the north diagram.
To know the difference in between heading and magnetic direction see the definition of a walking angle .
To switch from heading to magnetic direction see the article on the difference between the magnetic north and the geographical north .
You then need to convert the heading in a magnetic direction
